Position Description

The Registered Nurse assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care for individuals or families for whom the nurse is responsible.

Essential Behaviors and Responsibilities

 

  1. Maintain courteous and professional interactions with customers at all   times.  Greets each patient with a smile, acknowledges visitors in a timely manner, and addresses all customers using their proper title and last name.  Asks each patient “How may I help you?” and at the end of each encounter asks “Is there anything else I can do for you?”
  2. Communicate professionally and respectfully with all members of Ohio Valley Hospital while working to support a team oriented work environment. 
  3. Maintains customer confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential and adhering to the standards of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  4. Maintains responsibility for reporting to work on time, every scheduled work shift, and wearing proper ID badge.  (OVH Policy HR-210.06).
  5. Maintain a work environment in which everyone is to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.
  6. Abide and follow the guidelines in the Code of Conduct (OVH Policy AD-030.04) to create and foster a work environment that facilitates a team approach to patient care, promotes professional collaboration, and respects the individuality of each team member.  The employee shares accountability and responsibility for conducting themselves in a manner consistent with the Hospital’s mission, vision, and values. 
  7. Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and any other subsequent drug screen that may be requested.

 Essential Job Functions

 

  1. Reviews, collects and evaluates clinical data regarding current signs, symptoms, diagnoses and past medical history of assigned patients.
  2. Analyzes data from the assessment to formulate and prioritize the plan of care.
  3. Delegates or provides patient care according to the plan of care and/or department protocol and procedures.
  4. Prepares, administers, and monitors medication administration.  Administers and records medications accurately.
  5. Administers blood and blood products according to hospital policy and procedures.
  6. Communicates pertinent information to other medical professionals on the interdisciplinary team including but not limited to physicians, therapists, nutritional services, pharmacists, case managers, and social service staff.
  7. Reassesses and evaluates outcome of care provided and revises the plan of care as necessary.
  8. Uses critical thinking skills when making care judgement, dialoging with patient/families and/or prioritizing patient care.
  9. Provides education to patients and significant others during promotion, restoration and maintenance of health.

 

Additional Job Functions

 

  1. Conducts initial and ongoing assessments by appropriately reviewing, collecting and evaluating relevant clinical data for assigned patients.
  2. Uses patient assessment and clinical data to formulate patient plan of care.
  3. Completes all admission assessments in time allotted and initiates protocols as per policy.  Reassesses skin and fall assessments and initiate protocols as per policy.
  4. Delegates and supervises patient care including patient assignments, assuming charge responsibilities and daily staffing needs.
  5. Refers patients to community resources as needed.
  6. Educates, communicates, and supports patients and significant others in all stages of illness, especially for the dying patient.
  7. Demonstrates superb guest relation skills when caring for patients, their family members, and others.
  8. Participates actively in continuing education programs offered by Hospital and other appropriate outside agencies.
  9. Participates in department PI process.
  10. Responds to emergent situations and initiates appropriate actions.
  11. Complies with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions.
  12. Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department i.e. Maintenance, IS, and Biomed.
  13. Documents in the medical record according to established policies and procedures.
  14. Performs work in a timely, productive, and professional manner.
  15. Constructively receives feedback and direction.
  16. Demonstrates skills appropriate to assigned unit according to advanced skills checklist.
  17. Maintains Hospital and patient confidentiality of information.
  18. Assures that medical orders are transcribed and processed accurately.
  19. Reports and communicates patient's condition, progress, and changes effectively and documents in the medical record.
  20. Assists with orienting all levels of new staff for the unit, including but not limited to serving as preceptor.
  21. Participates actively in educating and supporting student nurses during their Hospital clinical experience on the unit.
  22. Assists LPN's as needed in order for the LPN to maintain his/her Scope of Practice.
  23. Adheres to all Hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required.
  3. Current Pennsylvania RN license required.
  4. Current CPR certification required.
  5. Two (2) years clinical experience preferred.
